31st January 2009

On Saturday 31st January the New Forest School Sports Partnership ran their second indoor athletics competition of the season at Applemore Leisure Centre. The Year 3 and 4 event was held with support from New Forest Juniors Athletics Club and young sports leaders from Hardley Secondary School. The event ran very successfully with 7 teams represented from 3 local primary schools: Blackfield; New Milton and Abbotswood. Hopefully with such a good event this year we can attract a few more schools to next year’s competition.

The competition format mirrored the Year 5/6 event, with the events being adjusted accordingly. All the year 3 and 4 pupils that took part in the competition gave huge commitment to each of the disciplines which resulted in a highly charged and very close contest. After all the field events had been completed the scores were added up for each team and combined with the results from the running events. This year’s competition was so close that if gave the scorers a tough job checking and double checking the final standings.

The Year 3 boy’s competition was won by New Milton A, pipping Blackfield A by 3.5 points, with Abbotswood A coming in a close 3rd. The girl’s competition in Year 3 saw a reverse in fortunes with Blackfield A coming out on top narrowly beating Abbotswood A. In the Year 4 boys section it was so close at the top that both Blackfield A and Abbotswood A couldn’t be separated, finishing top of the table with 33 points each. The final group score for the Year 4 girls was also tight as it was the turn of the Blackfield B team to finish top with 33 points, Abbotswood A and Blackfield A coming 2nd and 3rd with 32 and 28.5 points respectively.

After all the scores from each discipline were collated the overall positions were decided by a small margin of 1.5 points! Blackfield A came out eventual winners with a massive total score of 129.5 points. Abbotswood A finished a very creditable 2nd with an overall point’s total of 128 and taking the bronze medals in third place were New Milton A with a score of 121.

Well done to everyone who took part in this years event and we look forward to seeing you all next year and welcoming more teams to compete.
